TOMMY LEE Explains Why He Took Tap Dancing Lessons As A Kid

November 4, 2004

During his appearance on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" on Wednesday (Nov. 3) to promote his new book, "Tommyland", former MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee talked about taking tap dancing lessons as a kid. "I took tap dancing lessons just 'cause I thought, I swear, I thought you had to know that to be in show business," he explained. "And as a little kid growing up in Massachusetts, that's what I wanted, to be in show business. I actually did it because I wasn't really kinda the, the you know, hanging in the locker room spots kind of guy. So it involved being with girls. So I was like, 'Okay, I'll try this.' I was like, 'It'll be fun.' And, so we do this for our recital. And a picture runs in the local paper the day after. And the next day at school it was absolute hell for me. It was like, 'Dude, what is this?' And all my peers at school are like, 'Are you gay?' "

Lee has been working on a solo album, and recently laid down a song with SOMETHING CORPORATE's Andrew McMahon. He hopes to have Dave Grohl of FOO FIGHTERS and Lenny Kravitz also appear on the disc, which is due out next year.

The drummer is also the star of an upcoming reality series about his return to college, which has been filming at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
